The Final Task!

Alex was absolutely chuffed with the characters that the class came up with last week:

Gecko class were clearly feeling very inspired after seeing Alex’s “Hotel Flamingo” illustrations…they got straight on with the task and came up with some wonderful scenes! Take a look at these! Pigsticks and Harold have so many new friends:

And next week…Gecko class and their adopted author Alex will meet for the very first time at a very special party! Maybe Alex will share a few more sneak previews of his new book with them.

Looking forward to it, Geckos!

Start Sketching!

Alex was so pleased with Gecko class and their marvellous plasticine models last week. He sent them this lovely letter:

Screen Shot 2019-05-04 at 10.45.34Screen Shot 2019-05-04 at 10.45.45

So their challenge is to create a character of their very own! We really loved seeing some of Alex’s drawings, as he developed the look of a new character for his latest book.

Gecko got off to a great start:

Screen Shot 2019-05-04 at 10.55.25Screen Shot 2019-05-04 at 10.55.33

We spied quite a few Robots in there (with brilliant names like ‘RoBob’ and ‘Freezeabot’) We also really enjoyed seeing some of the characters develop even on a single page – like ‘Fluffy’, for example.

We can’t wait to find out what challenge Alex will set them next time…will these new, original characters turn up again?

Pigs in Plays…and Plasticine!

Gecko class had an INCREDIBLY creative week! Last week, Alex set them the task of developing some script for Pigsticks and Harold. They enjoyed it so much, that they even took it a step further and set themselves an extra challenge! Here is their letter to Alex:

Screen Shot 2019-04-28 at 17.12.58Screen Shot 2019-04-28 at 17.13.12Screen Shot 2019-04-28 at 17.13.24Screen Shot 2019-04-28 at 17.13.34Screen Shot 2019-04-28 at 17.13.59

We were absolutely stunned by their plasticine creations!

Does this make you want to have a go at making 3D versions of the characters? Perhaps you could even make a short animation by taking photographs of the plasticine models and using Gecko class’ wonderful scripts!

We’re so looking forward to reading Alex’s reply; we’re sure he’s going to be as blown away as we were.

Celebrity Pigs!

Last week, Alex set Gecko class the task of drawing Pigsticks as a celebrity or famous historical figure. Just look at what they came up with! We love the clever piggy names too… “Pigiana Grande” and “Hugh Pigman” are just two of our favourites!

They also sent Alex a wonderful letter, with a few ‘eye spy’ challenges for him to find in their artwork!

Alex wrote back, with some sneaky hints about how Harold & Pigsticks’ friendship might develop in Book 2! He also set them a brand new task:

Adopt An Author Team: Pigsticks & Harold! Have you heard about the new challenge for Gecko class?!

Pigsticks: I can’t wait to read them, my friend! Pigs are brilliant in plays.

Harold: Are you sure hamsters are good at acting, though?

Pigsticks: Definitely, Harold. There’s even a style of acting called ‘hamming’!

Adopt An Author Team: Good luck, Gecko class!

A Horde of Harolds!

Last week, Alex set Gecko class the challenge of drawing Harold the hamster.  Did you know that ‘horde’ is the special word for describing a group of hamsters?! There are 28 wonderful Harolds in this horde!

Screen Shot 2019-03-26 at 16.20.39

They also sent a new letter, letting Alex know what else they have been getting up to this week, and wondering if the “Pigsticks and Harold” books are ever translated into other languages!

Screen Shot 2019-03-26 at 16.17.14Screen Shot 2019-03-26 at 16.17.28

Alex sent back this lovely message, congratulating Geckos on their wonderful Harold drawings:

What a great new challenge! We can’t wait to see which famous people Gecko class will choose to turn into Pigs and Hamsters. Will there be a Dr. Frankenswine? Or a Pablo Pigcasso?!

Good luck, Gecko class!

Pigsticks Pictures!

This week, Gecko class rose to Alex’s challenge. They posted some of their brilliant illustrations to him, along with a few more well-chosen questions! They’ve been roaring through Alex’s book “Pigsticks and Harold & The Incredible Journey”; they’re on page 25 of the book already!

Here is a small sample of some of the wonderful work they sent to Alex to have a look at:

One of the class also made their own version of the “How To Draw Pigsticks” sheet that Alex sent last week… let us know if you use this to draw your own Pigsticks!

Running for 15 years by Collected Works as a Brighton Festival project, Adopt an Author is a very special programme promoting literacy and encouraging creative writing and illustrating. Over the course of 10 weeks, children will be corresponding with their paired writers, sharing thoughts on the book and making intriguing discoveries about the creative process. Pupils will be posing questions to the authors such as – ‘do you get tired when you write chapter books?’ and (a favourite from last year) ‘How do you stay looking so young?’

As ever, you can read all the AAA updates here on this blog… so don’t forget to subscribe for weekly updates. We’ll be sharing all the letters between the authors and the classes. Watch this space!

Hurrah for a Huffy Shark!

This week Alex has been busy answering some of Gecko’s and Iguana’s burning questions…. he also set them a pretty cool challenge too!

Hello Geckos and Iguanas!

Let me answer your questions!

What month is your birthday? Is it the same as any of ours in December (Eirmyas), March (Dougie), and July (Martin)

My birthday is in February!

How old are you? I think you are around 33 (Martin).

I was born in 1978, which makes me…

Which is your favourite type of pizza? (We are really looking forward to eating loads of pizza when we meet you for lunch in Brighton!)

I love pizza. My favourite is pepperoni and sweetcorn (very odd) but I do love a tomato and mozzarella pizza, especially with fresh basil.

What football team do you support?

I used to support Tottenham Hotspur, though I don’t really keep up with the team these days. I used to love playing it more than anything else.

Which is your favourite book that you have written?

My favourite is probably The Alien Moon, which is a Mythical 9th Division story. Though I must admit to really liking Pigsticks & Harold Lost in Time.

And so onto this week’s challenge. And this looks quite simple, but it’s not that easy. What I would love for you to do is create a new character to live in Tuptown. As you saw in the picture last week, there are many types of animal that live there. I would like you to choose a different animal from those, and turn it into a character that could live in the Pigsticks world.

I’ve attached a number of pictures from my sketchbook which will show you how different Pigsticks looked originally, when I first imagined him. You can see how he transformed (and Harold) until becoming something like we see him today in the books.
So pick an animal that you like, and have a good try at designing a new character – oh yes, and don’t forget to give it a name!

Hope you’re all enjoying the sun!

Speak soon,
Wow, how cool to see some pictures of Pigsticks in his early days! We love his transformation and it looks like Gecko and Iguana found it very useful for their task! Check out some of the newest Tuptown residents below! Who would you like as a neighbour?

We think all these fab character creations would be a brilliant fit in Tuptown and would love to get to know them all over a cup of tea!

Hello Alex, Pigsticks, and Harold!

Thank-you for your last challenge we loved creating our own Tuptown characters! We hope you enjoy our variety of different animals!
Here are some more questions we’d love answers to:
  1. What’s your favourite colour?
  2. What’s your favourite country in the world?
  3. Who’s your favourite Tuptown character?
  4. When is ‘Pigsticks and Harold and the Tuptown Sports Day’ coming out? We loved designing illustrations for that piece of writing!
  5. What is your favourite film?
We hope you are enjoying the sun. We spent our weekends going to the park, swimming at the beach, trampolining, and eating lots of barbecue food!
We are looking forward to the next challenge – hopefully it will be the hardest one yet!
See you soon,
Geckos and Iguanas!
Until next time when Alex will have answers to your brilliant q’s and what we’re sure will be the hardest task yet!
